Wood Door Skins

Skins are essentially very thick “veneers” laminated over engineered wood stiles. It is the wood skin that gives the door the appearance of being solid wood without the inherent problems of solid wood construction. Engineered wood cores, also called stave cores, drastically reduce the warping associated with solid wood doors. By ripping the core material into small pieces and then laminating them together, the stresses normally found in solid lumber are minimized, resulting in a much more stable product. In fact, the American Woodworkers Institute specifications require the use of engineered stiles for high-end custom doors.

The picture below shows a cross section of an engineered stile with both skins in place. Actually, the photograph shows the solid edging as well as the skins. When properly constructed using solid edging and skins, an engineered stile is superior in performance to a solid wood stile and nearly indistinguishable in appearance. On the following page we offer the wood skins for use on all of our wood doors. Other skins may be available, please contact a Belle Artae™ professional for a list of other wood skins not shown.
